30 March 1296: After his summons to King John Balliol was ignored and in direct response to the sacking of Carlisle and atrocities committed by Scottish forces in the north of England, Edward I stormed and sacked the border town of Berwick. Scotland’s largest and richest burgh was put to the sword with thousands reportedly killed. The Scottish response was to carry out more attacks on the civilian population in the north of England.
