3 April 1746: A Jacobite force under Donald Cameron of Lochiel and Alexander Macdonald of Keppoch broke off the siege of Fort William. Charles Edward Stuart had ordered all Jacobite detachments to assemble at Inverness in preparation for the Duke of Cumberland’s march north from Aberdeen. The siege of Fort William had been hampered by effective counter-battery fire from the garrison, feuding between the Camerons and Macdonalds and the incompetence of the Franco-Scots engineer Mirabel de Gordon.
3 April 1944: In Operation Tungsten, the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm badly damaged the German battleship Tirpitz while at anchor in Kaafjord in northern Norway. The Fleet Air Arm had practised for the operation in Loch Eriboll in Sutherland which has similar geography to Kaafjord. Eilean Choraidh was used to represent Tirpitz.
