1 May 1455: During the civil war between the House of Stewart and the powerful Black Douglas family, the Black Douglases were defeated by an army loyal to James II at the battle of Arkinholm, near Langholm.
1 May 1690: Scottish government forces under Brigadier-General Thomas Livingstone crossed the River Spey and attacked Major-General Thomas Buchan’s Jacobite army encamped at Cromdale and put them to flight, killing and capturing over 400. The engagement effectively ended the Jacobite rising of 1689.
