14 May 1689: The Earl of Angus’s Regiment of Foot (the Cameronians) was mustered at Douglas, Lanarkshire. It was commanded in the field by Lieutenant-Colonel William Cleland and was the largest regiment raised in support of the Revolution of William and Mary, with 1,200 men in two battalions. The regiment’s baptism of fire would come at the battle of Dunkeld when they held off the Jacobite army.
14 May 1752: Colin Campbell of Glenure, the government-appointed factor to the forfeited estates of the Stewarts of Appin, was shot and killed in the Wood of Lettermore in the event known as the ‘Appin Murder’.
