11 May 1141: The death at Skelton Castle, Yorkshire of Anglo-Norman magnate Robert de Brus, 1st Lord of Annandale. He was the first of the Bruce dynasty to hold lands in Scotland after he was granted the Lordship of Annandale by David I of Scotland in 1124.

11 May 1719: Under cover of a naval bombardment a landing party from Royal Navy warships Worcester and Enterprise attacked and captured Eilean Donan Castle and took the Spanish garrison prisoner during the Jacobite Rising of 1719.
