17 April 1746: Following his defeat at the battle of Culloden the previous day, Charles Edward Stuart arrived at Fort Augustus while the remnants of the Jacobite army made their way to Aviemore before continuing to Ruthven the next day. Charles appears to have intended a Jacobite gathering at Fort Augustus and a continuation of the campaign at this time.
