18 April 1746: Following their defeat at Culloden on the 16th, Jacobite forces converged on the village and barracks of Ruthven in Badenoch which had become a rallying point for the army. Around 4,000 men assembled there awaiting orders from Charles Edward Stuart. Expecting a continuation of the campaign they received the message: “Let every man seek his safety in the best way he can”.
